Past Continuous Tense With Examples

Past Continuous Tense

This tense is used to denote an action going on at some time in the past.

The Past Continuous Tense is commonly used with time expressions like:

while, when etc.

Assertive Sentence

Sub + was/were +V1+ ing + .............

For example

I was working at 10 pm last night.

They were not playing football at 9 am yesterday.

What were you doing at 10 pm last night?

What were you doing when he arrived?

She was cooking when I telephoned her.

Past Continuous Tense Uses

Rule - 1 Interrupted Action in the Past

This tense is used to indicate that a longer action in the past was interrupted. The interruption is usually a shorter action in the simple past.

For example

I was playing chess when she visited.

When the bell rang, he was packing his bag.

While we were playing cricket, it started to rain.

Rule - 2 Specific Time as an Interruption

In Rule - 1, described above as, the past continuous tense is interrupted by a shorter action in the simple past. However, we can also use a specific time as an interruption.

 

For example

Last evening at 6 PM, I was watching a movie.

At midnight, we were driving through the streets.

Yesterday at this time, we were playing.

 

Rule - 3 Parallel Actions

When we use the past continuous tense with two actions in the same sentence, it expresses the idea that both actions were happening at the same time. Here the both actions are parallel.

For example

I was sleeping while my friend was preparing dinner.

While Junaid was reading, Dilnawaz was watching television.

 

Rule - 4 Atmosphere

In English, we often use a series of parallel actions to describe the atmosphere at a particular time in the past.

For example

When I went to the office, my colleagues were busily working, some were talking to others, the boss was giving directions, and the customers were waiting.

 

Rule - 5 Repetition and Irritation with "Always"

The past continuous with words such as "always" or "constantly" expresses the idea that something irritating or shocking often happened in the past.

For example

Rajani was always coming to school late.

She was constantly talking in the office.

I didn't like them to be here because they were always wasting my time.

 

Past Continuous Negative Sentence

Subject + was/were + not + V1 +  ing + ………......

For example

She was not posting the letter.

Past Continuous Interrogative Sentence

Was/were + Subject + V1 + ing+ ………..?

For example

Was she posting the letter?

Past Continuous Negative Interrogative Sentence

Was/were + Subject + not + V1 + ing+ …………….?

For example

Was she not posting the letter?
