Either or & Neither nor A Complete Guide Step By Step

If we’re presenting two alternatives, we’ll often use “either … or” or a “neither … nor” construction. Here’s how those constructions work:

The usage of Either…or

“Either…or” is used in a sentence in the affirmative sense when referring to a choice between two things or people.

For example

You can choose either Idli or Dosa for your breakfast. (you can choose from any of the two options)

Singular or plural

When using “either...or” we should follow the following rules:

Rule - 1

If both Subjects are singulars, then the verb must be in the singular.

For example

Either my father or my mother has to attend the PTA meeting.

(The nouns 'father' and 'mother' are singulars; so, the verb 'has' is used.)

Rule - 2

However, if one of the subjects is plural, then we should use a plural verb.

For example

Either Dilnawaz or his friends are going to picnic tomorrow.

(The noun 'his friends' is plural; so, the verb 'are' is used.)

Rule - 3

If both Subjects are plurals, then the verb must be in the plural.

For example

Either the boys or the girls have to attend the class.

('boys' and 'girls' are plurals; so the verb 'have' is used.)

The usage of Neither…or

“Neither ... nor” is used in a sentence in the negative sense when we want to say that two or more things are not true.

For example

I like neither coffee nor tea. (I don't like coffee. I don't like tea.)

I like neither bread nor jam. (I don't like bread. I don't like jam)

Neither children nor adults came to the stadium. (Children did not come. Adults did not come.)

Singular or plural

When using neither...nor we should follow the following rules:

Rule - 1

If both Subjects are singulars, then the verb is singular too.

For example

Neither Latha nor Rajani likes curd.

('Latha' and 'Rajani' are singulars; so, the verb 'is' is used.)

Rule - 2

However, if one of the subjects is plural, then we should use a plural verb.

For example

Neither the teacher nor the students are in the classroom.

(The noun 'students' is plural; so, the verb 'are' is used.)

Rule - 3

If both Subjects are plurals, then the verb must be in the plural.

For example

Neither fruits nor vegetables are sold there.

('fruits' and 'vegetables' are plurals; so, the verb 'are' is used.)
