Past Perfect Tense

This tense is used to describe an action completed before a certain moment in the past, usually a long time ago. If two actions happened in the past, past perfect is used to show the action that took place earlier.

The Past Perfect Tense is commonly used with time expressions like:

already, just, never, when, before, after etc.

Sub + had + V3 + .............

 

For example

Had you come to the program before I came?

I had not watched the cricket match on television before you came.

He had not practiced the song before he sang it in the program.

I helped him to do the task after I had finished my work.

We had taken an ice-cream before we left the ice-cream parlour.

 

Past Perfect Tense Uses

Rule - 1 Completed Action Before Something in the Past

The Past perfect expresses the idea that something happened before another action in the past. It also shows that something happened before a specific time in the past.

 

For example

we had never seen such a beautiful place before we went to Kashmir.

Raghu did not have even a penny because he had lost my wallet.

Jorge only understood the story because he had already read the story.

 

Rule - 2 Duration Before Something in the Past

This these is used to show that something started in the past and continued up until another action in the past.

 

For example

I had had that bike for five years before it broke down.

We felt bad about selling the apartment because we had owned it for more than ten years.

Rule - 3 Important Specific Times with the Past Perfect

Unlike with the present perfect, Past Perfect tense is possible to use for specific time words or phrases. Even though this is possible, it is usually not necessary.

For example

My friend had visited his Indian relatives once in 2010 before he moved in with them in 2011.
