Simple sentence

Rule - 1

A simple sentence consists of a main clause with one subject and a predicate.

 

For example

Ramu             went to the market to buy fruits.

Subject                     Predicate

("Ramu" is subject, "went to the market to buy fruits" is predicate.)

Junaid            is a good boy.

 Subject                    Predicate

("Junaid" is subject, "is a good boy" is predicate.)

 

Rule - 2

A simple sentence consists of a main clause and a phrase. The phrases are like "in spite of, in case of, because of, despite" etc.,

For example

In spite of hard working,              my sister did not get a good job.

            Phrase                                               Main Clause

On account of holiday,     I went to Vijayawada.

            Phrase                                               Main Clause

 

Complex Sentence

A complex sentence consists of one main clause and one or more subordinate clauses joined by subordinate conjunctions. (though, although, since, as, when, after, no sooner, because etc.,)

For example

Though he is poor,             he is honest.

Sub-ordinate Clause         Main Clause

Since I got fever,                 I was absent to school.

Compound Sentence

A compound sentence consists of two or more than two main clauses joined by the coordinate conjunctions. (and, but, yet, still, so, or, therefore, or else etc.,)

For example

I worked hard          and                             I got good marks.

My sister did well               but                              she did not get a good job.

Rule - 1

1. Combine the Sentences with In spite of, Despite, In spite of that, Though, Although, But, Yet, Still

For example

In spite of his wealth, he is unhappy. (Simple)

He is wealthy, but he is unhappy. (Complex)

Though he is wealthy, he is unhappy. (Compound)

 

Despite having a headache, he had a great birthday. (Simple)

Although he had a headache, he had a great birthday. (Complex)

He had a headache yet he had a great birthday. (Compound)

For Example

Despite/In spite of the fact that I was sick, I worked hard. (simple)

Note: Despite and in spite of have the same meaning, (but we do not use ‘in’ or ‘of’ with despite).
